License to Touch

By Eva Marie Everson

If you were to look inside my trusty DayMinder (formerly known as a calendar!)…if you were to shuffle through the camp info papers (for my granddaughter) and the speaker info pages from various churches (for me)…you would find written on one tiny line next to 5:00 each and every month the name: Cassie.

Cassie is my massage therapist. And a very good one at that. I see her once a month, as my father used to say: whether I need to or not. And I always need to!  Sitting at this desk hour after hour, fibromyalgia, and fifty years of life have taken their toll. Even a short half-hour spent face down on Cassie’s massage table is easily the fix this body needs. Cassie has “a license to touch,” and in that touch, she has a gift of healing.

The first time I heard that phrase, “license to touch,” I was having lunch with Cassie, interviewing her for my book, Oasis, A Spa for Body & Soul. I said to her, “Ohhh…I love that….”

For me it was more than just the image of a person touching another in the healing act of massage. It was the image of Jesus, touching and healing those who came near to Him, being touched by the woman with the issue of blood, laying His hand upon the little children and referring to the Kingdom of Heaven as He did so.

Touch—the right kind of touch—is a beautiful thing. Though I cannot be touched physically by Jesus today, I can be touched spiritually. Each morning I ask Him to “touch me in a special way today.” That prayer, spoken earnestly, never fails to produce…because Jesus never fails to produce.

And the real beauty of it, I don’t need a calendar to schedule an appointment for a touch from the Master’s Hands.
